Transformative Trauma Therapy Los Angeles: Deep Healing from Abuse
Recovering from abuse demands more than symptom management. It requires transformative trauma therapy Los Angeles that addresses root causes and restores your authentic self. Whether you’ve experienced childhood trauma, domestic violence, sexual assault, or emotional abuse, the impact reaches deep into your sense of safety, your relationships, your body, and your spirit. At Angeles Psychology Group, we understand that abuse recovery counseling isn’t about quick fixes. It is profound, life-altering work that honors your courage while providing the specialized support needed for genuine healing.
Our holistic approach to childhood trauma treatment goes beyond conventional talk therapy. We integrate mind-body-spirit healing through specialized modalities including Orgonomic (Reichian) Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Emotion-Focused Therapy. This comprehensive PTSD therapy California approach addresses not only the psychological wounds but also the somatic armor that trauma creates in your body, helping you reclaim the vitality and authentic expression that abuse may have stolen from you.
Understanding the Deep Impact of Trauma
Abuse creates wounds that extend far beyond visible injuries. Trauma fundamentally alters your nervous system, affects your capacity for trust, damages your sense of self-worth, and compromises your ability to feel genuinely safe in the world. Survivors often experience flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, and profound challenges with intimacy and meaningful connection.
The effects of trauma manifest uniquely for each person. Some survivors struggle with overwhelming emotions and intrusive memories, while others experience dissociation or emotional flatness. Some face relationship difficulties rooted in attachment wounds, while others retreat into protective isolation. There is no prescribed way to respond to trauma, and your recovery journey is uniquely yours.
For families affected by abuse, the impact often ripples outward to partners, children, and loved ones who may carry their own feelings of helplessness, guilt, or secondary traumatization from witnessing their loved one’s suffering.
Types of Abuse We Address Through Specialized Treatment
Childhood Trauma and Developmental Wounds
Physical, sexual, emotional abuse, or neglect experienced during formative years creates complex developmental trauma that profoundly affects adult relationships, self-perception, and emotional regulation. Our childhood trauma treatment for adult survivors utilizes depth psychology and Internal Family Systems to heal these early wounds at their source.
Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Abuse
Physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse within intimate relationships requires comprehensive safety planning, trauma processing, and rebuilding of self-esteem and autonomy. Our abuse recovery counseling addresses both immediate safety needs and long-term healing.
Sexual Trauma and Assault Recovery
Recovery from sexual violence demands sensitive, specialized sexual assault recovery services that address both acute trauma responses and long-term effects on sexuality, intimacy, relationships, and embodied safety. We create a space where your experience is fully believed and honored.
Emotional and Psychological Abuse
The wounds from emotional abuse, including manipulation, gaslighting, threats, isolation, and control, can be as devastating as physical harm. Our therapists understand that psychological abuse creates deep relational trauma requiring careful therapeutic attention and validation.
Elder Abuse and Vulnerability
Older adults experiencing abuse need specialized support addressing both the trauma itself and additional vulnerabilities related to aging, health conditions, or care dependency.
Our Root-Cause Approach to Trauma Therapy Los Angeles
Orgonomic (Reichian) Therapy for Trauma Release
Trauma doesn’t just live in your mind. It becomes encoded in your body as muscular armor and blocked life energy. Our specialized Orgonomic (Reichian) Therapy approach combines character analysis with bodywork to break through defensive armoring, restore natural breathing patterns, and release trapped trauma from your physical self. This PTSD therapy California modality helps you reclaim authentic emotional expression and embodied aliveness.
Internal Family Systems for Complex Trauma
IFS provides a non-pathologizing framework for understanding how trauma creates protective parts within your psyche. Through this evidence-based childhood trauma treatment approach, we help you develop compassionate relationships with wounded inner parts, heal attachment injuries, and access your core Self, the calm, confident, compassionate center that trauma may have obscured.
Emotion-Focused Therapy for Attachment Healing
EFT helps you identify, experience, and transform the deepest emotions underlying your trauma responses while building secure attachment patterns. This humanistic abuse recovery counseling approach teaches you to use emotions as helpful guides rather than threats to avoid.
Depth Psychology and the Unconscious
We explore how trauma creates unconscious patterns affecting your relationships, choices, and sense of self. Through psychodynamic work with dreams, fantasies, and the therapeutic relationship itself, we bring hidden wounds into conscious awareness where they can heal.
Creating Safety as the Foundation
Physical and Emotional Safety
We prioritize establishing both physical and emotional safety as the absolute foundation for all trauma therapy Los Angeles healing work. This includes developing concrete safety protocols, crisis planning, and creating a therapeutic environment where you feel completely protected and respected.
Choice and Autonomy
We honor your autonomy by ensuring you maintain complete choice and control over your abuse recovery counseling process. You decide what to share, when to share it, how quickly to move through healing, and which modalities feel right for your journey.
Radical Honesty and Transparency
We build trust through consistent transparency and authentic relating. Unlike traditional neutral-stance therapy, we bring our full humanity to the therapeutic relationship while maintaining clear professional boundaries. You deserve therapists who are real with you.
Cultural Competency and Affirmative Practice
We provide truly affirmative therapy that honors your cultural background, identity, and lived experiences. Our therapists bring cultural humility and, in many cases, shared lived experiences as LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color. We understand how systems of oppression compound individual trauma.
Addressing Complex Trauma Responses
Emotional Dysregulation and Flooding
We teach practical skills for managing overwhelming emotions, reducing emotional numbness, and developing a healthier relationship with your feeling life through our PTSD therapy California approach. This includes real-time co-regulation and nervous system restoration.
Anxiety, Panic, and Hypervigilance
We provide specific somatic and cognitive techniques for managing the anxiety, panic attacks, and constant vigilance that often result from trauma. You’ll learn to differentiate between real present threats and trauma-based responses.
Depression and Disconnection
We address the profound depression and sense of disconnection that often accompanies trauma while rebuilding hope, meaning, and genuine connection to life, self, and relationships.
Sleep Disturbances and Nightmares
We help with the sleep difficulties and nightmares that frequently plague trauma survivors, teaching techniques for improving sleep quality and managing night-time symptoms through our comprehensive childhood trauma treatment.
Dissociation and Grounding
We teach embodied grounding techniques to help you stay present and connected to your body when experiencing dissociative symptoms or flashbacks. Somatic awareness practices help you reclaim your physical self.
Rebuilding Relationships and Intimacy
Attachment Repair
We work on healing your capacity for healthy attachment and intimate relationships through our abuse recovery counseling, addressing how trauma disrupted your ability to trust and connect with others safely.
Boundary Development
We help you develop healthy boundaries that protect your wellbeing while allowing for meaningful connections with safe, supportive people. Many survivors struggle to know where they end and others begin.
Communication and Assertiveness
We teach assertive communication skills that help you express needs clearly, set limits effectively, and navigate relationships with greater confidence and authenticity.
Sexual Healing
When appropriate, we provide sensitive sexual assault recovery services for rebuilding healthy sexual relationships and addressing how abuse affected your sexuality, desire, and capacity for pleasure.
Family and Relationship Trauma Healing
Partner Support
We offer relationship therapy to help partners understand trauma’s impact and develop skills for providing effective support without caretaking or enabling patterns that prevent healing.
Family Systems Work
We provide family therapy addressing how trauma affects entire family systems, helping family members heal together while breaking intergenerational trauma patterns.
Parenting After Trauma
We support survivors in developing healthy parenting approaches that do not replicate abusive patterns, helping you give your children the safety and attunement you may not have received.
Addressing Co-Occurring Conditions
Substance Use and Addiction
We address substance use that may have developed as trauma coping, providing integrated treatment for both addiction and underlying trauma through our comprehensive PTSD therapy California approach.
Eating Disorders and Body Image
We treat eating disorders that frequently co-occur with abuse histories, addressing both disordered eating behaviors and the underlying trauma driving them.
Self-Harm and Suicidality
We provide specialized support for survivors who engage in self-injury or experience suicidal ideation as coping mechanisms, helping develop healthier ways to manage overwhelming pain.
Chronic Pain and Somatic Symptoms
We address the physical health impacts of trauma stored in your body, helping develop healthier ways of relating to pain and physical symptoms.

Meet Our Founder
Neil Schierholz PsyD
I am the founder of Angeles Psychology Group and a Clinical Psychologist with a focus on helping people heal from chaos, overwhelm, harshness, and social inhibitions. Much of my work focuses on relationships: The relationship you have with yourself, others, the environment, and the cosmos.
I help people come home to who they really are, either by remembering it or discovering it for the first time. This happens through dismantling and gaining lasting freedom from unconscious defenses that are holding you back from having the life you really want and can have. I primarily use holistic character analysis and orgonomic (somatic) therapy in my work, coupled with a strong sociocultural, feminist orientation.
I work with adult individuals, couples, families, and all sorts of personal and professional relationships.
Research shows that the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor for successful outcomes. Let’s get started with a free consultation to explore if I’m the best fit for you.
