Antisocial Personality Disorder

Living with antisocial personality disorder affects relationships, legal standing, and life stability in profound ways. At Angeles Psychology Group, we provide specialized antisocial personality disorder therapy Los Angeles that addresses root causes through comprehensive ASPD treatment California. Our approach integrates personality disorder counseling, conduct disorder therapy LA, and behavioral intervention services with depth psychology, helping you develop genuine empathy, rebuild trust, and create meaningful change through transformative mind-body-spirit healing.

Understanding Antisocial Personality Disorder Beyond Stereotypes

Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, beginning in childhood or early adolescence and continuing into adulthood. This pattern includes deceitfulness, impulsivity, irritability and aggressiveness, reckless disregard for safety, consistent irresponsibility, and lack of remorse after hurting or mistreating others. However, at Angeles Psychology Group, we understand that beneath these behavioral patterns often lie deep developmental wounds, attachment trauma, and profound disconnection from authentic emotional life.

Many people with ASPD experienced severe childhood trauma, neglect, abuse, or inconsistent caregiving that disrupted normal emotional and moral development. The seemingly callous behaviors often developed as survival mechanisms in environments where vulnerability meant danger and emotional connection led to pain. Our antisocial personality disorder therapy Los Angeles recognizes that lasting change requires addressing these root causes, not simply punishing or controlling surface behaviors.

ASPD exists on a spectrum, and not everyone with this diagnosis exhibits extreme antisocial behaviors. Some individuals maintain employment and relationships while struggling with impulsivity, deceitfulness, or difficulty maintaining genuine emotional connections. Others face repeated legal problems, relationship destruction, and inability to function in society. Our ASPD treatment California approach is tailored to your specific presentation and readiness for change.

The Deep Roots of Antisocial Patterns

Childhood Trauma and Attachment Disruption

Research consistently shows that ASPD correlates strongly with early childhood trauma, particularly physical abuse, sexual abuse, severe neglect, and witnessing violence. These experiences disrupt normal attachment formation and empathy development. When caregivers are sources of terror rather than safety, children develop profound mistrust and disconnect from vulnerable emotions as survival mechanisms. Our personality disorder counseling addresses these developmental wounds through trauma-informed approaches.

Neurobiological Differences

Individuals with ASPD often show differences in brain regions governing emotional processing, impulse control, and moral reasoning. These neurobiological factors interact with environmental experiences, creating patterns of behavior that feel automatic and ego-syntonic. Understanding these biological components helps reduce shame while developing strategies for managing impulses through our behavioral intervention services.

Family Systems and Learned Patterns

ASPD often develops within family systems characterized by harsh or inconsistent discipline, parental antisocial behavior, substance abuse, or emotional neglect. Children learn that manipulation, aggression, and self-interest are necessary for survival and success. Our family therapy approach addresses these intergenerational patterns when appropriate and safe.

Cultural and Social Factors

Experiences of poverty, discrimination, community violence, and systemic oppression can contribute to development of antisocial patterns as adaptive responses to hostile environments. Our culturally competent conduct disorder therapy LA recognizes how social context shapes behavior without excusing harm caused to others.

Our Root-Cause Approach to ASPD Treatment California

Depth Psychology and Unconscious Patterns

We explore the unconscious forces driving antisocial behaviors, including early experiences of betrayal, overwhelming rage, profound emptiness, or terror of vulnerability. Through psychodynamic work examining dreams, fantasies, and the therapeutic relationship itself, we help bring these hidden forces into conscious awareness where they can be understood and transformed rather than acted out destructively through our antisocial personality disorder therapy Los Angeles.

Internal Family Systems for ASPD

IFS offers a revolutionary framework for understanding antisocial patterns as protective parts of your psyche developed to shield extremely wounded aspects of yourself. Rather than viewing you as inherently bad or evil, we explore how manipulative, aggressive, or callous parts formed to protect vulnerable child-parts carrying unbearable shame, terror, or pain. Through this personality disorder counseling approach, you can develop compassionate relationships with all your parts, allowing antisocial protectors to soften as underlying wounds heal.

Orgonomic (Reichian) Therapy for Somatic Healing

Antisocial patterns often involve profound disconnection from authentic emotional life and restricted capacity for empathy or remorse. Our specialized Orgonomic (Reichian) Therapy approach addresses the somatic armor, which includes chronic muscular tension and blocked life energy, that creates this emotional deadness. Through gentle bodywork combined with character analysis, we help restore capacity for genuine feeling, vulnerability, and connection that antisocial defenses block.

Emotion-Focused Therapy for Developing Empathy

EFT helps you identify, access, and work with emotions that may have been inaccessible or overwhelming. We create safe conditions for experiencing vulnerable feelings like hurt, fear, shame, or longing that antisocial defenses protect against. As you develop capacity to tolerate and express these emotions appropriately, the need for antisocial behaviors naturally decreases through our ASPD treatment California approach.

Addressing Core Treatment Challenges

Motivation and Readiness for Change

Many individuals with ASPD enter treatment due to external pressure, such as legal mandates, relationship ultimatums, or employment requirements, rather than internal motivation. We work with wherever you are in your readiness for change, using motivational interviewing to explore potential benefits of behavior change while respecting your autonomy. Our conduct disorder therapy LA recognizes that lasting transformation requires internal motivation, which we help cultivate through the therapeutic relationship.

Building Therapeutic Alliance

Trust and genuine connection are profoundly difficult for individuals with ASPD, yet the therapeutic relationship itself becomes a primary vehicle for healing. We provide consistent, non-judgmental presence while maintaining clear boundaries and authentic honesty. This may be one of the first relationships where manipulation does not work and where you are seen fully without either condemnation or naive idealization through our antisocial personality disorder therapy Los Angeles.

Developing Genuine Empathy

Cognitive empathy, or understanding others’ perspectives intellectually, may be intact while emotional empathy, or actually feeling concern for others’ suffering, remains underdeveloped. We work on connecting intellectual understanding to emotional experience, helping you access and tolerate the vulnerable feelings that allow genuine empathy to emerge. This is not about forcing empathy but creating conditions where it can naturally develop.

Managing Impulsivity and Risk-Taking

We teach practical strategies for recognizing impulse triggers, pausing before acting, considering consequences, and choosing behaviors aligned with your long-term goals. Our behavioral intervention services include concrete skills for managing the boredom, restlessness, and sensation-seeking that often drive impulsive behaviors.

Behavioral Interventions and Skills Development

Identifying Consequences and Costs

We help you develop realistic understanding of how antisocial behaviors have actually cost you, including relationships, opportunities, freedom, and self-respect. This is not about inducing guilt or shame but about clear-eyed assessment of whether your patterns are actually serving your interests or repeatedly sabotaging what you might genuinely want.

Developing Alternative Coping Strategies

Antisocial behaviors often serve functions, such as managing overwhelming emotions, obtaining resources, maintaining sense of control, or avoiding vulnerability. We help identify what functions your behaviors serve and develop alternative strategies meeting those needs without causing harm to yourself or others through our personality disorder counseling approach.

Anger and Aggression Management

We address the irritability and aggression characteristic of ASPD through somatic awareness, trigger identification, and development of non-violent conflict resolution skills. This includes recognizing early warning signs of escalating anger and implementing de-escalation strategies before violence occurs.

Building Frustration Tolerance

Individuals with ASPD often have low frustration tolerance and difficulty delaying gratification. We work on gradually building capacity to tolerate discomfort, wait for rewards, and persist through challenges without immediately seeking escape or stimulation through destructive behaviors in our ASPD treatment California program.

Addressing Co-Occurring Conditions

Substance Use Disorders

Substance abuse commonly co-occurs with ASPD, often compounding impulsivity, aggression, and poor judgment. We provide integrated treatment addressing both the personality patterns and substance use, recognizing how each maintains the other. Our conduct disorder therapy LA includes comprehensive substance abuse interventions when needed.

Trauma and PTSD

Many individuals with ASPD have experienced severe trauma requiring specialized treatment. We address traumatic experiences and their ongoing impacts through trauma-informed approaches, understanding how unprocessed trauma fuels antisocial behaviors as maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Mood Disorders

Depression and bipolar disorder frequently co-occur with ASPD. We treat underlying mood dysregulation through evidence-based approaches, recognizing how mood instability exacerbates impulsivity and interpersonal difficulties requiring our behavioral intervention services.

Other Personality Disorders

ASPD often overlaps with narcissistic, borderline, or paranoid personality features. We address the full complexity of your personality organization rather than focusing narrowly on antisocial criteria, providing comprehensive personality disorder counseling that honors your unique presentation.

Relationship Repair and Social Functioning

Taking Genuine Responsibility

We help you develop capacity to take authentic responsibility for harm caused to others, not out of external pressure but from genuine recognition of impact. This requires developing empathy, tolerating remorse, and making meaningful amends through changed behavior over time in our antisocial personality disorder therapy Los Angeles.

Rebuilding Trust with Family

When appropriate and safe, we involve family members in treatment to address relationship damage and rebuild trust. This requires consistent demonstration of changed behavior over extended periods, honoring that trust must be earned through actions rather than words or promises.

Developing Authentic Relationships

We help you learn to form genuine connections based on mutual respect and care rather than manipulation and exploitation. This requires vulnerability, consistency, and truly caring about others’ wellbeing, capacities that may feel unfamiliar initially but can be cultivated through our ASPD treatment California approach.

Professional and Legal Functioning

We address work-related difficulties including irresponsibility, rule violations, and interpersonal conflicts. For individuals involved in the legal system, we provide treatment supporting successful probation or parole completion through demonstrated behavior change and skill development.

Long-Term Management and Relapse Prevention

Recognizing High-Risk Situations

We help you identify situations, emotions, or circumstances that increase risk of returning to antisocial patterns, such as stress, substance use, relationship conflicts, or boredom. Developing awareness of these triggers allows proactive management through our conduct disorder therapy LA strategies.

Building Prosocial Support Systems

We help you cultivate relationships with people who model and reinforce prosocial behaviors rather than enabling or participating in antisocial patterns. This may require significant changes in social circles and lifestyle choices through our behavioral intervention services guidance.

Developing Meaning and Purpose

Many individuals with ASPD describe profound emptiness or lack of purpose. We explore what might bring genuine meaning to your life beyond immediate gratification or manipulation of others, helping you develop values and goals worth changing for through our personality disorder counseling.

Ongoing Accountability and Support

Lasting change often requires ongoing therapeutic support, regular check-ins, and external accountability structures. We help establish these systems supporting continued progress and preventing regression to previous patterns through our antisocial personality disorder therapy Los Angeles.

Specialized Group Therapy Considerations

Gay Men’s Therapy Group

For gay men with ASPD features, our specialized group addresses how antisocial patterns may intersect with identity development, experiences of homophobia, and particular challenges navigating intimacy and vulnerability in LGBTQ+ contexts.

Black Men’s Healing Group

This group provides space for Black men to address antisocial patterns within contexts of systemic racism, criminalization, and survival in hostile environments. We explore how justified anger at oppression can be honored while developing behaviors supporting rather than sabotaging your wellbeing and community.

The Angeles Psychology Group Difference

Specialized Depth Psychology Expertise

Our therapists offer advanced training in Orgonomic (Reichian) Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and depth psychology, specialized approaches rarely found in conventional ASPD treatment. This expertise allows us to address personality patterns at deeper levels than traditional behavioral approaches through our comprehensive ASPD treatment California.

Non-Judgmental, Honest Approach

We maintain authentic, direct communication without condemning you as irredeemably bad or naively accepting manipulation. This genuine honesty within clear boundaries may be unprecedented in your experience and becomes essential for real change through our conduct disorder therapy LA.

Trauma-Informed Understanding

We recognize that antisocial patterns typically develop as adaptations to traumatic early experiences. Our approach addresses these developmental wounds with compassion while maintaining accountability for current behaviors and their impacts on others.

Culturally Competent Care

We provide therapy honoring your cultural background and lived experiences, understanding how social context, discrimination, and systemic oppression intersect with personality development. Our therapists bring cultural humility and often shared experiences as people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Extended Hours and Flexible Options

Our behavioral intervention services are available 7 AM-10 PM daily through both in-person sessions in our tranquil Mid-Wilshire office and secure telehealth options, accommodating diverse schedules and reducing barriers to consistent treatment engagement.

Realistic Expectations and Hope

ASPD is among the most challenging personality disorders to treat, and change requires significant time, effort, and commitment. However, research shows that antisocial behaviors often decrease with age, and meaningful change is possible when treatment addresses root causes rather than simply attempting behavioral control. Many individuals develop increased capacity for empathy, improved impulse control, and more stable relationships through sustained therapeutic work.

Our personality disorder counseling does not promise to fundamentally change who you are but rather to help you develop healthier ways of meeting your needs, form genuine connections, and build a life that is actually satisfying rather than repeatedly self-sabotaging. This work is challenging and requires genuine commitment, but transformation is possible.

I am the founder of Angeles Psychology Group and a Clinical Psychologist with a focus on helping people heal from chaos, overwhelm, harshness, and social inhibitions.  Much of my work focuses on relationships: The relationship you have with yourself, others, the environment, and the cosmos.

I help people come home to who they really are, either by remembering it or discovering it for the first time.  This happens through dismantling and gaining lasting freedom from unconscious defenses that are holding you back from having the life you really want and can have.  I primarily use holistic character analysis and orgonomic (somatic) therapy in my work, coupled with a strong sociocultural, feminist orientation.

I work with adult individuals, couples, families, and all sorts of personal and professional relationships.

Research shows that the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor for successful outcomes. Let’s get started with a free consultation to explore if I’m the best fit for you.
