Breaking Destructive Patterns: Comprehensive Conduct Disorder Treatment

When your child or teen consistently breaks rules, violates others’ rights, shows aggression, or engages in destructive behaviors, it leaves families feeling scared, exhausted, and desperate for help. At Angeles Psychology Group, we provide specialized conduct disorder treatment that addresses root causes through comprehensive teen behavioral therapy services. Our holistic approach integrates oppositional defiant disorder counseling, aggressive behavior intervention, and child behavior modification therapy with family systems work, helping interrupt dangerous patterns, heal underlying wounds, and rebuild trust through transformative whole-family healing.

Understanding Conduct Disorder Beyond “Bad Behavior”

Conduct Disorder represents one of the most serious childhood behavioral disorders, involving persistent patterns of behavior that violate the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate social norms. These aren’t isolated incidents or typical teenage rebellion, they are ongoing patterns involving aggression toward people and animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness or theft, and serious violations of rules that significantly impair functioning at home, school, and in the community. At Angeles Psychology Group, our conduct disorder treatment recognizes that children exhibiting these behaviors aren’t simply choosing to be “bad”, they are often responding to complex combinations of trauma, attachment wounds, neurological differences, family dysfunction, or other underlying challenges requiring comprehensive therapeutic intervention. Children and teens with conduct disorder may display physical cruelty to people or animals, use weapons to cause harm, force others into sexual activity, deliberately set fires, destroy property, break into homes or cars, lie to obtain goods or avoid responsibilities, stay out all night despite parental prohibitions, or run away from home repeatedly. The behaviors often escalate over time, creating increasingly serious consequences including legal involvement, family crisis, educational failure, and damaged relationships. Without specialized teen behavioral therapy services, these patterns frequently continue into adulthood as antisocial personality disorder, substance abuse, criminality, or chronic relationship dysfunction. Understanding conduct disorder requires recognizing it as a disorder of disrupted development, particularly in conscience formation, empathy development, emotional regulation, and attachment security. These children haven’t internalized moral values guiding prosocial behavior because developmental conditions necessary for that internalization were absent or disrupted. Our oppositional defiant disorder counseling addresses these developmental deficits at their source rather than simply punishing surface behaviors.

The Devastating Impact on Families

Parents Living in Fear and Exhaustion

Parenting a child with conduct disorder is terrifying and emotionally devastating. You may fear for your safety or the safety of other family members. You’ve likely tried every consequence, reward system, or intervention you can imagine without success. The guilt, shame, and helplessness can be overwhelming, wondering what you did wrong, fearing judgment from others, and feeling like you’ve lost your child to behaviors you don’t understand. Our aggressive behavior intervention provides support for parents navigating this traumatic experience.

Siblings Traumatized by Chaos

Brothers and sisters often become collateral damage, feeling unsafe in their own home, sometimes targeted by their sibling’s aggression, having their belongings destroyed, or witnessing violence that creates lasting trauma. They may develop anxiety, depression, behavioral problems, or struggle academically due to chronic stress at home. These siblings deserve specialized support through our child behavior modification therapy approach.

The Child Behind the Behaviors

Despite concerning behaviors, children with conduct disorder often carry profound pain, trauma, shame, and disconnection. Many have experienced abuse, neglect, or chaotic caregiving disrupting normal emotional and moral development. They may feel fundamentally unlovable, believe the world is hostile, and lack capacity for genuine remorse due to damaged empathy development. Understanding this pain doesn’t excuse harmful behavior but recognizes that punishment alone cannot heal developmental wounds requiring our conduct disorder treatment.

Extended Family and Social Isolation

Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends often distance themselves, uncomfortable around your child or critical of your parenting. Social invitations stop. Other parents don’t want your child around their children. This isolation compounds family stress and deprives you of crucial support through our teen behavioral therapy services approach.

Our Root-Cause Approach to Conduct Disorder Treatment

Trauma-Informed Assessment and Healing

Many children with conduct disorder have experienced severe trauma, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, witnessing domestic violence, or chaotic caregiving environments. These experiences fundamentally alter brain development, particularly in areas governing empathy, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Our trauma-informed oppositional defiant disorder counseling addresses these neurobiological impacts through specialized approaches including EMDR and somatic therapies, helping children process traumatic experiences while building capacity for healthy emotional functioning.

Attachment Repair Through Family Systems Work

Conduct disorder almost always involves disrupted attachment, the fundamental bond between parent and child that should provide safety, regulation, and internalized moral guidance. When attachment is insecure or disorganized, children don’t develop capacity for empathy, remorse, or genuine connection. Our family therapy focuses intensively on repairing these attachment bonds, helping parents become sources of safety and regulation rather than additional threat or chaos. This attachment repair represents the foundation for all other therapeutic work through our aggressive behavior intervention.

Internal Family Systems for Understanding Protective Parts

IFS offers powerful framework for understanding conduct disorder behaviors as extreme protective strategies developed by parts of the child’s psyche attempting to prevent vulnerability, control threatening environments, or express unbearable pain. The aggressive parts, manipulative parts, and rule-breaking parts aren’t the child’s core Self but protective strategies that once made sense in contexts of trauma or chaos. Through our child behavior modification therapy utilizing IFS, we help children access their core Self, compassionate, connected, and capable of prosocial relating, while understanding what their protective parts were trying to accomplish.

Emotion-Focused Therapy for Building Empathy

Children with conduct disorder often struggle to identify, express, or regulate emotions appropriately. They may use anger to cover vulnerability, act out to avoid painful feelings, or seem emotionally disconnected. EFT helps build emotional awareness, teaches healthy expression of vulnerable emotions, and gradually develops empathy through experiencing and understanding emotional states in safe therapeutic relationships. This emotional capacity-building is essential for conduct disorder treatment success.

Depth Psychology and Unconscious Dynamics

We explore family-of-origin patterns, intergenerational trauma, unconscious dynamics maintaining behavioral patterns, and deeper psychological forces affecting the child and family system. Through psychodynamic work, we understand how family roles, parental unresolved trauma, and multigenerational patterns contribute to current difficulties, addressing these systemic issues through our teen behavioral therapy services.

Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention Strategies

Immediate Safety Planning

We begin with thorough safety assessment addressing risks of violence, self-harm, fire-setting, sexual acting out, or other dangerous behaviors. We help families develop concrete safety plans including environmental modifications, supervision strategies, crisis protocols, and clear guidelines for when to seek emergency intervention. Safety is non-negotiable foundation for all therapeutic work through our oppositional defiant disorder counseling.

Structured Behavioral Systems

While addressing root causes, we simultaneously implement structured behavioral systems providing clear expectations, consistent consequences, and meaningful rewards. These aren’t simple punishment-reward schemes but sophisticated systems accounting for the child’s developmental level, trauma history, and capacity for self-regulation. We teach parents how to implement these systems with consistency while maintaining emotional connection through our aggressive behavior intervention.

Environmental Assessment and Modification

We assess home, school, and community environments identifying factors triggering or maintaining problematic behaviors. This includes peer influences, unsupervised time, access to weapons or fire-starting materials, family conflict patterns, or community violence exposure. We work with families to modify these environmental factors creating conditions supporting prosocial behavior through our child behavior modification therapy.

Multi-System Coordination

Effective treatment requires coordination across all systems touching the child’s life, family, school, juvenile justice, child protective services, medical providers. We facilitate communication between these systems, ensure consistent approaches, advocate for appropriate services, and help families navigate complex institutional requirements through our conduct disorder treatment approach.

Building Core Capacities for Change

Emotional Regulation Skills

We teach concrete skills for recognizing emotions early, understanding what triggers them, and managing intense feelings without destructive acting out. This includes anger management, distress tolerance, self-soothing techniques, and appropriate emotional expression. These skills require extensive practice and coaching in real-life situations through our teen behavioral therapy services.

Empathy and Perspective-Taking Development

Empathy doesn’t emerge through lecturing about others’ feelings but through gradual emotional experiences in safe relationships. We create conditions allowing empathy development, helping children connect their own painful experiences to understanding others’ pain, practicing perspective-taking in low-stakes situations, and experiencing genuine care from adults despite their behaviors. This empathy building is central to our oppositional defiant disorder counseling.

Moral Reasoning and Values Formation

Children with conduct disorder often lack internalized moral values guiding behavior, they respond to external consequences but haven’t developed internal compass distinguishing right from wrong based on caring about others. We work on moral development through discussing ethical dilemmas, exploring consequences of actions on real people, and helping children identify personal values they want to embody through our aggressive behavior intervention.

Social Skills and Prosocial Relationship Building

Many children with conduct disorder lack basic social skills for forming healthy friendships, resolving conflicts appropriately, or reading social cues accurately. We teach and practice these skills while helping them connect with prosocial peers through structured activities, mentoring relationships, or community involvement providing positive alternatives to antisocial peer groups through our child behavior modification therapy.

Intensive Parent Training and Support

Trauma-Informed Parenting Approaches

Traditional parenting approaches often fail with traumatized children, sometimes making behaviors worse. We teach trauma-informed parenting recognizing that conventional discipline may trigger trauma responses, that connection must precede correction, and that these children need both structure and deep emotional attunement. Parents learn to provide firm limits while maintaining emotional availability through our conduct disorder treatment.

De-Escalation and Crisis Management

We teach parents specific techniques for recognizing escalating situations early, implementing de-escalation strategies preventing violence or destruction, maintaining safety during crisis, and helping children return to regulation after intense emotional episodes. These practical skills are essential for daily management through our teen behavioral therapy services.

Self-Care and Parental Wellbeing

Parents of children with conduct disorder often experience secondary trauma, chronic stress, depression, anxiety, and relationship strain. We provide support for parental wellbeing, help couples maintain their relationship despite parenting stress, and address parents’ own trauma histories that may be triggered by their child’s behaviors through our oppositional defiant disorder counseling.

Building Positive Parent-Child Connection

Amid managing difficult behaviors, the positive parent-child relationship often deteriorates entirely. We help parents find ways to connect positively with their child, identifying shared interests, creating special one-on-one time, catching and reinforcing prosocial moments, and maintaining hope for their child’s potential despite current difficulties through our aggressive behavior intervention.

Addressing Co-Occurring Conditions

ADHD and Executive Function Deficits

ADHD commonly co-occurs with conduct disorder, with impulsivity and poor planning contributing to behavioral problems. We address executive function deficits through specialized interventions while recognizing that ADHD doesn’t excuse antisocial behavior but requires tailored approaches through our child behavior modification therapy.

Learning Disabilities and Academic Struggles

Unaddressed learning disabilities create frustration, low self-esteem, and school avoidance often manifesting as behavioral problems. We coordinate comprehensive educational assessment and appropriate supports addressing these underlying academic challenges through our conduct disorder treatment.

Substance Abuse

Adolescents with conduct disorder frequently develop substance use problems compounding behavioral issues and family dysfunction. We provide integrated treatment addressing both conduct problems and substance abuse through evidence-based approaches in our teen behavioral therapy services.

Depression and Anxiety

Despite appearing angry or indifferent, many children with conduct disorder struggle with depression, anxiety, or PTSD hidden beneath aggressive exteriors. We assess and treat these mood disorders while addressing behavioral patterns through our oppositional defiant disorder counseling.

School and Community Integration

Educational Planning and Support

We work with schools developing appropriate educational plans, behavioral supports, and interventions helping children succeed academically while managing behavioral challenges. This includes special education services when appropriate, behavioral intervention plans, and teacher consultation through our aggressive behavior intervention.

Positive Activity Involvement

We help families identify structured activities, sports, arts, community service, mentoring programs, providing prosocial outlets for energy and opportunities to develop competence, connection, and identity beyond antisocial behaviors through our child behavior modification therapy.

Juvenile Justice Navigation

When legal involvement occurs, we help families navigate juvenile justice systems, advocate for treatment rather than purely punitive responses, and ensure legal consequences support rather than undermine therapeutic progress through our conduct disorder treatment approach.

Community Resources and Support

We connect families with community resources, respite care, support groups, recreational programs, mentoring services, providing additional support beyond therapy through our teen behavioral therapy services network.

Long-Term Recovery and Prevention

Relapse Prevention Planning

We help families recognize early warning signs of behavioral deterioration, implement intervention strategies before full relapse, and maintain gains achieved through treatment. Recovery isn’t linear, setbacks occur, but families learn to respond effectively through our oppositional defiant disorder counseling.

Transition Planning for Young Adults

For older adolescents, we develop plans for transition to adulthood including education, employment, independent living, and continued therapeutic support ensuring gains don’t evaporate with decreased structure through our aggressive behavior intervention.

Continued Family Healing

Even after behavioral symptoms improve, families often need ongoing work rebuilding trust, healing from trauma of difficult years, and developing healthier relational patterns. We provide longer-term family therapy supporting this healing process through our child behavior modification therapy.

Sibling Recovery Support

Siblings may need individual therapy addressing their own trauma, anxiety, or behavioral issues developed during years of family chaos. We ensure these children receive appropriate support through our conduct disorder treatment approach.

Specialized Group Therapy Considerations

Gay and Gender-Diverse Youth

LGBTQ+ youth with conduct disorder face compounded challenges, minority stress, family rejection around identity, and discrimination potentially contributing to behavioral problems. We provide affirmative care addressing both conduct issues and identity-related stressors through our teen behavioral therapy services.

Youth of Color and Systemic Issues

Youth of color, particularly Black boys, are disproportionately diagnosed with conduct disorder and funneled into juvenile justice rather than treatment systems. We provide culturally-responsive care recognizing how racism, discrimination, and systemic oppression contribute to behavioral patterns while avoiding pathologizing appropriate responses to injustice through our oppositional defiant disorder counseling.

I am the founder of Angeles Psychology Group and a Clinical Psychologist with a focus on helping people heal from chaos, overwhelm, harshness, and social inhibitions.  Much of my work focuses on relationships: The relationship you have with yourself, others, the environment, and the cosmos.

I help people come home to who they really are, either by remembering it or discovering it for the first time.  This happens through dismantling and gaining lasting freedom from unconscious defenses that are holding you back from having the life you really want and can have.  I primarily use holistic character analysis and orgonomic (somatic) therapy in my work, coupled with a strong sociocultural, feminist orientation.

I work with adult individuals, couples, families, and all sorts of personal and professional relationships.

Research shows that the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor for successful outcomes. Let’s get started with a free consultation to explore if I’m the best fit for you.
