Understanding LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Beyond Pathology
Being LGBTQIA+ is not a disorder, illness, or condition that requires fixing. Sexual orientations such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, and others are natural expressions of human sexuality. Gender identities such as transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, and more are valid forms of human gender diversity. The mental health challenges LGBTQIA+ people face arise from living in societies shaped by heterosexism, cisnormativity, transphobia, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination. At Angeles Psychology Group, our LGBTQIA+ therapy centers your identity as a source of strength while addressing the real emotional impact of marginalization, rejection, internalized oppression, and navigating systems built for cisgender heterosexual norms. We provide a healing environment where your identity is honored, your experiences are validated, and your wellbeing is supported through compassionate evidence based care.
LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, substance use struggles, suicidal ideation, and other mental health concerns. These disparities are not caused by being LGBTQIA+ but by ongoing minority stress, social exclusion, systemic oppression, family rejection, and cumulative trauma. Effective care requires understanding these contextual realities rather than pathologizing identity through our queer affirmative counseling approach.
Many of our therapists are LGBTQIA+ themselves, bringing both clinical expertise and lived understanding. We offer truly affirming support that celebrates your identity, recognizes the complexities you navigate, and helps you build a life where you can thrive fully and authentically through our gender identity therapy services.
Minority Stress and Its Impact
Understanding Minority Stress Model
Minority stress theory explains how chronic stress caused by stigma, discrimination, and social marginalization produces mental health disparities. LGBTQIA+ people face external stressors such as harassment, violence, and rejection, along with internal stressors such as expectations of rejection, identity concealment, and internalized stigma. These cumulative pressures significantly affect wellbeing through our coming out support understanding.
Internalized Homophobia and Transphobia
Growing up in a world that stigmatizes LGBTQIA+ identities often results in internalized negative beliefs. This may appear as shame, self doubt, religious guilt, or the belief that your identity is wrong or unworthy. Addressing and releasing internalized oppression is essential healing work through our transgender mental health counseling.
Hypervigilance and Safety Concerns
LGBTQIA+ individuals often evaluate safety constantly. Questions like whether it is safe to hold a partner’s hand, disclose being trans, or correct pronouns become daily calculations. This ongoing vigilance taxes the nervous system over time through our LGBTQIA+ therapy approach.
Microaggressions and Cumulative Impact
Frequent microaggressions such as misgendering, heteronormative assumptions, invasive questions, or exclusion accumulate and create significant emotional strain. These repeated harms impact identity, mood, and self worth through our queer affirmative counseling intervention.
Identity Development and Coming Out
LGBTQIA+ Identity Formation
Understanding and accepting sexual orientation or gender identity is a complex developmental process. Many navigate this journey without family support, which creates additional emotional challenges. We provide guidance and affirmation throughout this process through our gender identity therapy services.
Coming Out as Ongoing Process
Coming out is not a single moment but an ongoing experience repeated across contexts including family, friendships, workplace, healthcare settings, and new relationships. Each disclosure carries emotional labor and risk. We help you navigate this ongoing process through our coming out support.
Timing and Safety Considerations
Coming out should never be rushed or forced. We help you assess safety, create disclosure plans, prepare for a range of reactions, and build support regardless of how others respond through our transgender mental health counseling approach.
Family Reactions and Grief
Families may respond with acceptance, confusion, conditional acceptance, or rejection. When rejection occurs, grief, loss, and instability often follow. We provide specialized therapeutic support for healing and rebuilding through our LGBTQIA+ therapy.
Gender Identity and Transgender Experiences
Gender Dysphoria and Gender Euphoria
Gender dysphoria involves distress from a mismatch between assigned sex and gender identity. Social dysphoria, bodily dysphoria, or misgendering may be especially painful. We also honor gender euphoria, the joy of living in alignment with your gender identity through our queer affirmative counseling.
Transition Support and Exploration
Transition looks different for every person. Social, medical, legal, or non transition paths are all valid. We support thoughtful exploration of what transition means for you through our gender identity therapy services.
Navigating Medical Transition
We help you process feelings about hormones, surgeries, and medical decisions, while navigating healthcare systems and family responses through our transgender mental health counseling approach.
Nonbinary and Genderqueer Identities
We affirm identities beyond the gender binary and provide support for expressing your gender in ways that feel authentic and true to you through our coming out support.
Relationship and Dating Challenges
LGBTQIA+ Dating and Relationships
Queer dating presents unique considerations including smaller dating pools, safety concerns, potential fetishization, and navigating relationships outside heteronormative models. We support healthy and fulfilling relational development through our LGBTQIA+ therapy understanding.
Internalized Oppression in Relationships
Internalized stigma can create difficulties with vulnerability, trust, or intimacy. We help you work through these patterns to build meaningful and secure relationships through our queer affirmative counseling.
Relationship Diversity
LGBTQIA+ communities embrace diverse relationship structures such as monogamy, polyamory, ethical non monogamy, and queerplatonic partnerships. We affirm your chosen structure without judgment through our gender identity therapy services approach.
Sex and Intimacy
We offer sex positive, affirming support for LGBTQIA+ sexual health, intimacy concerns, consent, and pleasure without shame or heteronormative assumptions through our transgender mental health counseling.
Family of Origin and Chosen Family
Navigating Family Rejection
Family rejection creates real trauma. We support grieving these losses, setting boundaries, and building emotional safety within or outside biological family systems through our coming out support approach.
Building Chosen Family
Chosen family is often essential for LGBTQIA+ wellbeing. We help you cultivate supportive and affirming relationships that form your emotional foundation through our LGBTQIA+ therapy.
Family Reunification When Possible
Some families grow toward acceptance over time. We assist with navigating reconciliation when it becomes healthy and safe through our queer affirmative counseling approach.
Parenting as LGBTQIA+ Person
LGBTQIA+ parents face distinct challenges including navigating fertility systems, adoption processes, and supporting children in potentially discriminatory environments. We provide ongoing support through our gender identity therapy services.
Our Root Cause Approach to Queer Affirmative Counseling
Internal Family Systems for LGBTQIA+ Parts
IFS offers a helpful framework for understanding how different parts of you have adapted to living in a world that marginalizes LGBTQIA+ identities. Protective parts may hide your identity, while other parts carry shame or fear. Through our transgender mental health counseling utilizing IFS, we support unburdening internalized oppression and nurturing your authentic self.

Meet Our Founder
Neil Schierholz PsyD
I am the founder of Angeles Psychology Group and a Clinical Psychologist with a focus on helping people heal from chaos, overwhelm, harshness, and social inhibitions. Much of my work focuses on relationships: The relationship you have with yourself, others, the environment, and the cosmos.
I help people come home to who they really are, either by remembering it or discovering it for the first time. This happens through dismantling and gaining lasting freedom from unconscious defenses that are holding you back from having the life you really want and can have. I primarily use holistic character analysis and orgonomic (somatic) therapy in my work, coupled with a strong sociocultural, feminist orientation.
I work with adult individuals, couples, families, and all sorts of personal and professional relationships.
Research shows that the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor for successful outcomes. Let’s get started with a free consultation to explore if I’m the best fit for you.
